Description
The Minidewak ceremony is a long-held tradition among the Potawatomi people, which was often performed at pow wows. The meaning of the word is, “They give from the heart.” In this ceremony, an honored person (often the chief) would place their belongings and gifts on a blanket to give away to others in the tribe. Nothing is expected in return except gratitude. There is beauty in both the giving and receiving.
This simulation works well for both younger and older students. The ceremony is appropriate for a class that focuses on nature such as Land of the Free. It can also work well in a history class that focuses on Native American history. Students will enjoy making and sharing gifts with their classmates as a way to celebrate the end of a great semester or year.
