Description
Why do this simulation with your kids?
“. . .we will begin to see how their journeys parallel ours now. There are lessons for us in every footstep they took–lessons of love, courage, commitment, devotion, endurance, and, most of all, faith. Those 19th century pioneers to whom we pay special tribute never set out to be heroes, and yet they accomplished heroic things. “
– M. Russell Ballard “You Have Nothing to Fear from the Journey” May 1997 Ensign
-
To help students recognize the leadership, patience and organizational skills that were necessary to safely cross the plains, and still necessary to work in a group today.
-
To feel the frustrations and difficulties the pioneers felt, choosing between hard choices, not knowing exactly what would be best.
-
To encourage thinking about what success is, what is important in life and what really matters.
-
To have FUN!!
Suggested Ages: 10-18
Mentor Level: Intermediate
This simulation runs best with a knowledge of how to run games. Having a second helper is important if you have more than 3 teams. A second (or third) helper could be useful for taking pictures and answering questions. If you have a lot of help, you could send an adult with each group as a scribe and timekeeper. If you have students that read and write proficiently, this isn’t necessary.
Class size: 2-50
