Description

Hodge Podge /noun/
1. A confused mixture of different things. syn:
a mixed bag, assortment, selection, jumble, patchwork

This is a fun class for Transition students that will help them bridge the gap between Love of Learning (LOL) and Scholar Phase.  New Scholars, who come straight from LOL, can sometimes feel overwhelmed by the idea of doing a presentation in front of their peers or writing a paper every week. Hodge Podge is a way to help! In this class, we take a mixture of skills that Scholars need and begin to introduce them to students in a fun way. This class is typically for 11-year old students, who are preparing to take Scholar classes the following year.

This purchase is for one copy of the Mentor Binder for HodgePodge class. Please purchase a separate copy for each mentor. Mentor Binder includes 14 lessons with easy to follow descriptions for how to mentor each lesson. Two Play Pretends (simulations for Transition stage students) are included.

I have a class this year of 5 students, 11-15 years old. This curriculum is fitting their needs so well! The variety is great with the group of diverse ages and personalities. They all love the Show and Tell and were asking for more when they thought it was over after Unit 1.

For one of our “Play Pretends” I had them plan a Spook Alley for a Halloween Party at my house. Then they implemented it. The moms reported back to me how many life skills their children were learning and using in the follow through (calling people, asking for help, planning, taking responsibility, etc.).

The students are also enjoying doing the homework in the binder, getting a small prize in class for it, and sharing with the class a little bit about it. I had a mom ask me if there was another homework binder, because her daughter loved it and was going though it so fast! Once again, there is a lot of variety in the homework options, so the kids can pick what they are interested in and feel comfortable with.

The curriculum has been easy to implement. Less than an hour (probably close to 30 minutes) of my own time each week in preparation.

It was difficult to get all the parents to follow through with purchasing, printing, and giving the student binders to their children. In the future I will prep that myself and charge them the extra cost. That will be easier on parents, mentors, and students.
