Description

This class is a basic overview
of some of the principles of design. The principles that
will be covered in this class
are: value; shapes; line; textures; color;
application of color; repetition, variation and patterns;
proportion; dominance,
subordination, and focal points; contrast; balance; the
golden ratio; and positioning
and
overlap. The focus of this class is to help the scholars understand and

recognize these principles in artwork and in the
world around them. This will
give them a different perspective from which to view
artworks, both manmade and
natural,
and will enable them to look deeper at what truly makes art great or
beautiful. With a knowledge of the principles of design
scholars will be able
to analyze art work better and will also be able to share
their thoughts and
ideas with others in a more effective way. They will also
learn to apply these
principles to different types of mediums such as painting,
photography, and
sculpting. However, this is not intended to be a drawing or
painting class.
Different art mediums will be used in the projects and
homework assignments,
but the level of competence that each student has with those
mediums doesn’t
matter. Scholars of any artistic level can learn about and
practice these
principles and elements.
