ADDITIONAL CHARACTERS

In addition to Shakespeare’s original characters, the following parts have been added for comedy.

  • TROUBADOUR – Occasionally narrates/sings/summarizes in between scenes (think Robin Hood rooster). Very helpful for the audience.

  • THE CLOCK – With so many references to time in this play, a real live clock is occasionally manipulated by characters or blamed for their misfortunes, but the clock will keep the time. Bonus if the actor can actually tap dance!

  • SHAKESPEARE himself – He’s there to make sure the play goes as it should, to define archaic words, or be just offstage with script in hand to cue any forgotten lines!

  • NELL – A character usually never seen in the original version, here she makes a “large” appearance referred to as “Globe Lady,” also known as Luce in other versions.

  • OFFICIER– A comical companion to the Jailor. With the two of them in charge, nothing could go wrong.

  • CUPID – How else would Antipholus fall in love with the sister of his presumed wife?

  • TOWNSPEOPLE – A chance for more small speaking roles. When extra parts or lines are needed, their lines can be easily divided up.

  • SINGING MINSTRELS – They come out at the beginning and end of each act, singing and dancing to four songs to help move the plot along. Can be in a choir like fashion or can include choreographed dancing. Easily given to any or all cast members. Whoever wants to sing and dance!

This was an amazingly funny play. It was very entertaining for all ages. Our youth in the play had a really enjoyable time participating in this play. My daughter was one of the leads and did exceptionally well. Having it be a musical really put the icing on the cake. I highly recommend!
