Description
In this activity, students will learn about the importance of keeping information secret during wartime, as demonstrated by the Navajo code talkers in the book Code Talkers by Joseph Bruchac. After an introduction to the Navajo language and its role in the Pacific theater, students will be given five coded clues, each representing a key moment or theme from the book. They will use a Navajo code cipher to decode the clues and uncover a hidden reward. This hands-on experience will emphasize how the Navajo language, rarely spoken and difficult for enemies to understand, became an unbreakable code vital to American success. By the end, students will gain a deeper understanding of the significance of code talkers in securing victory during World War II.
